Many of the dense fractals I have been exploring lately naturally live on a two-dimensional sphere. A while ago, I started displaying them as full spherical panoramas using a Java applet (see this blog post). With all the recent problems with Java, and browsers strongly discouraging people to launch unsigned Java applets, I had to find another way of displaying them. Luckily, Matthew Petroff wrote a very nice WebGL applet for this purpose, Pannellum, which is now used throughout my website. See three examples of spherical panoramas here. You might have been bored by the long recent series of black and white images... It was a series of fractal patterns extracted from a single dense Julia set, obtained by modifying systematically a parameter in the coloring method. I find the variety of fractal pattern obtainable in this way quite mind boggling.
